Dear Friends,
If you come here sad today or overwhelmed or anxious about something the Word is perfect for you, especially the psalm: the Lord is kind and merciful. As far as the East is from the West that is as far as he will throw our sins so that we don’t see them. Every time we confess it is like our life is rewound to the time when we had no sin. He does not treat us as we deserve. If you come sad today, this word is marvelous for you. Christ is the only one who fulfills it: love and pray for your enemies!
There is a detail that I never saw before. Love your enemies, Jesus says, and then you will be children of God. If you don’t love your enemies, you will not be his children. It is interesting that Jesus does not say: go to Mass every day and then you will be his sons and daughters, or pray all the time, or get a good education and then you will be my children. No, he says, love your enemies and do good to them.
It is curious how some kids look like their father, exactly, and others look exactly like their mother, and others exactly like a mixture of the two. To be a Christian means that you look exactly like God your Father. What is the essence of God? God is not the one who loves, he is the one who IS love. It is not that he loves a lot; he IS LOVE. It is not any kind of love. It is not revolutionary; it is not a Marxist love. It is a love that leads one to die for the other.
The world says: an eye for an eye. Today it says: if you take my eye, I will take your whole body. If you hit me with one fist, I will pummel you with a hammer. If you cut me off on the highway, I will smash your car. The world seeks vengeance as we see in the first reading. David has a chance to kill, and he does not. Who can lay a hand on the ‘anointed one’ of God, even if that one is trying to kill him? The true revolutionary is the one who love the enemy, who prays for him and does good to him. This is real revolutionary.
Mel Gibson in his move the Passion of the Christ wanted to appear in it. Don’t strain looking for him because only his left hand appears. It is the hand that nails Christ to the cross. He understood it very well that when he is an egoist, an adulterer, a lover of money, he is killing Christ. He understood it perfectly. To turn the other cheek, to go an extra mile, is for the crazy one, for the nut case. Who can do this? Only Christ!!
St. Paul says I don’t do the good that I want to do, but the evil that is inside of me. But at some point, he says, I have finished the race, I won the prize, but it was not me, it was Christ in me. One day we will say the same, so relax, it will happen one day. Don’t rob God of the glory. Our Lord wants to free us from any kind of vengeance, worldly thoughts; he wants to give us peace and joy. If you have an enemy, rejoice. Now He gives you a chance to love, the chance to be truly a Christian!
