Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It is a wonder that God chose for the Holy Family this way of weakness and hiddenness to save the world. They became very vulnerable and it demanded much wisdom and prudence. Imagine how many boys less than two years old were killed by Herod within days of the gospel we hear tonight.
Joseph’s main act of obedience was to take the Child and Mary to himself. He did not walk away; he took them to his home and cared for them, and did not leave them alone. We see the opposite of that many times today. He is the model of a true Christian. Look at what he did: he rises, he packs, he gets everyone ready, and then he sets out on the same night for Egypt. True, it is safer to go at night, but he does not delay or put it off; he acts immediately. Because he obeys, God speaks to him again and again in dreams. God speaks to him as a friend, using the familiar form, tu!
It is almost like the Father and the Holy Spirit have to get used to the humanity of the Son. This is a big change for them. They have to deal with him in a different way now that he is a man. Other men and women have to protect him and they can’t keep sending angels every five minutes…
You know, why can’t God tell Joseph, and us, what his plan is for the next year or two? Why does Joseph have to be so dependent on what God will do next? Did you ever think of that? But Joseph can only grow in holiness and fidelity in this way. The same is true for you and me. God is patiently shaping his heart, and ours. His whole purpose is to raise us up from death to life, to love as he loves.
Joseph never tires of waiting for God, as the events of his life and his family change. Go to Bethlehem; find a place to have the Child. Then flee to a foreign country; then come back but wait, don’t go back to your home town; go to Nazareth where your wife is from. Their life was turned upside down. Have you had this kind of experience? Have you had an experience of love that makes you abandon your whole being for the sake of another? The Holy Family is a school where we can learn this kind of self-denial, where little by little we can begin to live in a different way, not because we are strong or good or anything like that. Only because God helps us to do so!
Matthew tells us that Herod is dead, but the word he uses is not the typical word for death; it has more the meaning of ‘conclusion’, or ‘goal’, or ‘accomplishment.’ Matthew is not so much thinking of Herod’s physical death, but his blindness in comparison to God’s greatness. Herod could not see the wonder of God. He had to set himself up as a petty god, revolting against the true God. If Herod, or anyone, sees his dependence on God and clings to him, his ‘end’ will not be a death, but a ‘conclusion’ that greatly exceeds our poor earthly life.
I sense he is saying: what is found in the heart of man, will determine the end of man. Our goal has to be something outside of us, greater than us, which is what we are made for, to be like God. When we sin we cut from him who is our source of oxygen. The only way to get our hearts, which can be like Herod’s, is to migrate over little by little to be like God’s; to participate in the plan that he has for us, to imitate a little this Holy Family.
These gospels of Joseph and Mary and the child show us something marvelous. How wonderful it is for us to enter these mysteries and learn from them. They speak to our own lives which are not much different. Let us see that God has a plan for each of us, and the only important thing is to follow it.

Es una maravilla que Dios eligió para la Sagrada Familia este camino de debilidad y ocultamiento para salvar al mundo. Se volvieron muy vulnerables y exigió mucha sabiduría y prudencia. Imagine cuántos niños menores de dos años fueron asesinados por Herodes pocos días después del evangelio que escuchamos esta noche.
El principal acto de obediencia de José fue llevar consigo al Niño y a María. No se alejó; los llevó a su casa y los cuidó, y no los dejó solos. Vemos lo contrario de eso muchas veces hoy. Es el modelo de un verdadero cristiano. Mira lo que hizo: se levanta, empaca, prepara a todos, y luego se marcha la misma noche a Egipto. Es cierto que es más seguro ir de noche, pero no se demora ni lo pospone; él actúa de inmediato. Debido a que obedece, Dios le habla una y otra vez en sueños. Dios le habla como amigo, usando la forma familiar, tu!
Es casi como si el Padre y el Espíritu Santo se acostumbraran a la humanidad del Hijo. Este es un gran cambio para ellos. Tienen que tratar con él de una manera diferente ahora que es un hombre. Otros hombres y mujeres tienen que protegerlo y no pueden seguir enviando ángeles cada cinco minutos …
Ya sabes, ¿por qué Dios no puede decirle a José y a nosotros cuál es su plan para el próximo año o dos? ¿Por qué José tiene que depender tanto de lo que Dios hará después? Alguna vez has pensado en eso? Pero José solo puede crecer en santidad y fidelidad de esta manera. Lo mismo es cierto para usted y para mí. Dios está moldeando pacientemente su corazón y el nuestro. Todo su propósito es elevarnos de la muerte a la vida, amar como él ama.
Joseph nunca se cansa de esperar a Dios, a medida que cambian los acontecimientos de su vida y su familia. Ir a Belén; encontrar un lugar para tener el niño. Luego huir a un país extranjero; luego regresa pero espera, no vuelvas a tu ciudad natal; Ve a Nazaret de donde es tu esposa. Su vida se puso patas arriba. ¿Has tenido este tipo de experiencia? ¿Has tenido una experiencia de amor que te hace abandonar todo tu ser por el bien de otro? La Sagrada Familia es una escuela donde podemos aprender este tipo de abnegación, donde poco a poco podemos comenzar a vivir de una manera diferente, no porque seamos fuertes o buenos o algo así. ¡Solo porque Dios nos ayuda a hacerlo!
Mateo nos dice que Herodes está muerto, pero la palabra que usa no es la palabra típica para la muerte; tiene más el significado de “conclusión” u “objetivo” o “logro”. Mateo no piensa tanto en la muerte física de Herodes, sino en su ceguera en comparación con la grandeza de Dios. Herodes no podía ver la maravilla de Dios. Tuvo que establecerse como un dios mezquino, rebelándose contra el Dios verdadero. Si Herodes, o alguien, ve su dependencia de Dios y se aferra a él, su “fin” no será una muerte, sino una “conclusión” que excederá en gran medida nuestra pobre vida terrenal.
Tengo la sensación de que está diciendo: lo que se encuentre en el corazón del hombre determinará el fin del hombre. Nuestro objetivo tiene que ser algo fuera de nosotros, más grande que nosotros, para lo que estamos hechos, para ser como Dios. Cuando pecamos, cortamos al que es nuestra fuente de oxígeno. La única forma de obtener nuestros corazones, que pueden ser como los de Herodes, es migrar poco a poco para ser como los de Dios; participar en el plan que tiene para nosotros, imitar un poco a esta Sagrada Familia.
Estos evangelios de José, María y el niño nos muestran algo maravilloso. Qué maravilloso es para nosotros entrar en estos misterios y aprender de ellos. Hablan de nuestras propias vidas que no son muy diferentes. Veamos que Dios tiene un plan para cada uno de nosotros, y lo único importante es seguirlo.
