You Were Within Me, But I Was Outside

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Word today is perfect for this celebration of Trinity Sunday.  Keep in mind that we have no idea what the Trinity is no matter how many theologians there are who have studied the subject.  From what the Lord revealed to us we know that there is one God and three persons.  We will know more when we are in the presence of God.  Then we will more fully understand the Trinity.  This is why it is better not to speak of things we do not know.  So be patient, one day we will know for sure.  As I said last week, faith is not intellectual knowledge, faith is an experience.  We may not know the essence of the Trinity but surely, we have experienced it.  I can say that I have experienced God as my Father in my life, Jesus Christ as my savior and also the Holy Spirit.  I can point to specific events of my life, and I hope that you can too.

The essence of God is Love.  The action of God is love, or communion, and if you have experienced this love of God, then you have experienced the Trinity.  In many ways I am sure that you have experienced this love since the Gospel is always a Good News.  The Eucharist and the Word always helps us to rest.  In the world we are always hearing bad news.  Everyone gives you bad news, your children, your spouse, your friends.  But the Lord always gives us good news!

God gives us two wonderful words today.  In the first reading Moses says to the Lord that He has found favor with us even though we are a stiff-necked people.  He will pardon our wickedness and sins and receive us as his own.   So, what is the good news?  That you and I are the inheritance of the Lord.  In other words, he wants to have you for his inheritance.  It is not the usual inheritance of a small farm or house.  He wants to make you and me his inheritance.  You belong to the Lord.  He wants to defend you.  You and I belong to the Lord.  He wants to put himself, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in us.

The other good news is the gospel.  God so loved the world that the gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.  God sent his Son into the world for love of you and me.  He did not send his Son to judge the world.  In the cross that we see in front of us, we have an image of the love of the Trinity.  It is represented here in this crucifix.  He loves you so much that he wants to give you the very life of his only Son so that you will have life.  If you had only one son, would you give him away?   Imagine if some robbers or kidnappers, enter your house and they want to steal from you for whatever you have.  You say to them, wait a minute, take my son, and do whatever you want with him.  This is what God has done for you and for me.  It is unbelievable!

The first reading says that we are a poor people full of weaknesses and sins.  The Lord looks at us with such a great love and sends his Son not to judge us.  Christ does not judge you.  This is very important today.  He does not judge you; he loves you, and he loves you madly, and understands your poverty, your sins.  He understands your falls.  On the cross he says that he forgives his executioners because they do not know what they are doing.  He excuses us, exonerates us always.  That’s why you and I have to insist on this a lot because being a Christian is  to have Christ within us.  We can have his life in us so that we can love like this when Christ dwells in us.  You can love like this, and you can be made righteous, holy, in the sight of God.  You can be vindicated when you have this love inside of you.  You can be the happiest man or woman in the world.  This is what the most Holy Trinity makes present.

The Lord wants you to be his inheritance.  He said blessed is the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells.  We are the temple of our Lord Jesus Christ where he dwells.  The temple is you.  He is eager to enter your life.  How does he do it?  It is by the works of Jesus Christ who wants to enter your marriage, he wants to enter your house, your life, your loneliness, your ministry; he wants to enter into your old age, into the cross you are carrying.  This is the love of the Trinity.  He wants to be the Lord in each one of us!

The Lord does not tell you that you are wicked, that you are a sinner, that you have to change your life, to correct this or that.  The Lord does not do this.  He comes to love you deeply and then starts to put your life in order, but first he loves you.  It’s not like you and me who love each other when the other changes to the way we want him.  No God is not like that not with us.  First, he saves and then little by little, little by little, he begins to transform us.  This is the Trinity so cheer up, brothers and sisters, hopefully one day soon we can see the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  One day we will see him with our eyes and will be in his presence when we arrive in heaven.
